Caitlin Clark’s return will have to wait. And if you ask Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White for an update, she’ll keep it real.
“No. Not yet. Sorry,” White said on June 3, when asked whether there was any change to the injury statuses of Clark or Sophie Cunningham, per Scott Agness’ YouTube channel.
After a brief pause, White added, “I wish,” with a smile — a sentiment echoed by Fever fans awaiting Clark’s re-evaluation from a left quadriceps strain suffered on May 24. The team previously announced Clark would miss at least two weeks, and that timeline still projects her out through the team’s June 7 game against the Chicago Sky.
Even without Clark, the Fever found a way to end their three-game losing streak Tuesday night with an 85–76 win over the Washington Mystics.
Kelsey Mitchell led Indiana with 23 points, while Lexie Hull scored all 14 of her points in the second half. The Fever trailed by two at halftime but erupted for 31 points in the third quarter—outscoring their entire first-half total of 38—to build a 69–55 lead.
Aari McDonald, making her Indiana debut after signing on a hardship exception, played 27 minutes and 26 seconds and made an immediate impact. She finished with seven points, one rebound, five assists, and three steals, including a timely three-pointer in the third quarter that was part of Indiana’s season-high 11 made threes. Her energy and composure helped steady the backcourt amid ongoing injuries.
Aliyah Boston added 10 points, and Indiana improved to 3–4 on the season.
The Mystics made a run early in the fourth quarter, opening with a 12–0 surge to trim the lead to 69–67 on a layup by Brittney Sykes. But the Fever responded with a 7–0 run of their own to regain control.
Hull scored on a layup to make it 78–73, then helped force a jump ball on the next possession. The Fever secured the tip, and Mitchell converted a reverse layup while drawing a foul to complete a three-point play, pushing the lead to eight with 1:28 remaining.
Indiana closed strong, relying on timely stops and smart execution to seal the victory.
Clark, who leads the team in both scoring and assists, has now missed three straight games with a quad injury. Cunningham, who exited early in Friday’s loss to Connecticut, did not play against Washington either. No further update was given for either player’s timeline.
Despite the shorthanded rotation, the Fever found new contributors and snapped a frustrating losing streak with poise and late-game execution.
The Fever return to action on June 7 for a nationally anticipated matchup against Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky. However, it remains unlikely that Clark will be cleared to return by then, requiring Indiana to continue relying on deeper parts of its rotation to secure a needed win.
