The Indiana Fever finally clinched their spot in the WNBA playoffs after Sunday’s dominant 94-65 victory over the Washington Mystics.
The Fever improved to 23-20 after Sunday’s win, and are currently seventh in the league. Indiana, however, can climb up to No. 6 if they are able to win their season finale against the Minnesota Lynx, who will be without MVP frontrunner Napheesa Collier in Tuesday’s game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
There was only one game on the docket on Monday night, but it had significant implications for the Fever’s opponents in the first round of the playoffs. The Atlanta Dream blew out the No. 11 Connecticut Sun, 87-62, which saw Atlanta climb to the No. 2 spot in the WNBA.
If the playoffs started tomorrow, the No. 2 Dream would host the No. 7 Fever in a best-of-three series in the opening round. However, with both teams still scheduled to play one more game, the seedings can still change.
The Fever will finish sixth if they win on Tuesday, which means that they will face the No. 3 side. As of now, this is the Las Vegas Aces, who are in the midst of a 14-game winning streak.
The bottom line is that, regardless of whether Indiana finishes sixth or seventh, their opponents in the first round will either be the Dream or the Aces.
Either way, the shorthanded Fever will face a tough matchup in the first round as they look to improve on last season’s early exit in the opening round. It won’t be an easy task for Indiana, but given how resilient this team has been amid all the injuries it has faced this season, it would be foolish to count this squad out at this point.
