Kelsey Mitchell is entering unrestricted free agency in the WNBA offseason. She has already indicated her plan to be “selfish” as she explores the market, adding that she will do what’s best for her and her career.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding her future with the Fever, that didn’t stop the team from celebrating Mitchell after her latest achievement.
On Saturday, the WNBA named Mitchell to the All-WNBA First Team, along with her Indiana teammate Caitlin Clark. Las Vegas Aces center A’ja Wilson, New York Liberty forward Breanna Stewart and Minnesota Lynx guard Olivia Miles complete the First Team.
Mitchell is certainly deserving of the honor. After all, she had a historic season with the Fever, averaging the second-highest points per game in the league with 24.7. She also broke the WNBA record for the most total points in a season with 1,086.
With Mitchell leading the way alongside Clark, the Fever finished with a 28-16 record, earning the sixth seed in the WNBA standings.
In their post, the Fever congratulated Mitchell on her achievement and shared a strong and clear message about their superstar.
“no one can guard Kelsey Mitchell,” the Fever stated. “congrats to Kelz on All-WNBA First Team honors.”
For what it’s worth, Mitchell has developed a reputation as one of the toughest players to defend in the WNBA, so the Fever aren’t simply exaggerating in their message.
Fever star Lexie Hull said during the season that Mitchell is the hardest player to guard in the WNBA and that she’s thankful to have been her teammate. Dallas Wings star Paige Bueckers shared a similar sentiment, noting that Mitchell is “so unpredictable,” “fast, twitchy, extremely quick” and “can also shoot.”
