It has been quite a season for Kelsey Mitchell and the Indiana Fever. With Caitlin Clark missing half the games so far this year, Mitchell has stepped up in a major way.

Mitchell is the leading scorer on a Fever team that sits at 9-9 heading into Wednesday’s home game against the Los Angeles Sparks. Indiana holds third place in the Eastern Conference standings.

The 5-foot-8 guard from Ohio State is averaging 19.3 points and 2.9 assists per game. Mitchell was the second overall pick in the 2018 WNBA Draft and continues to play at an All-Star level.

On Monday, Mitchell was featured in a WNBA social media post highlighting the best assists of the week.

“Take a look at the best of the best in the @StateFarm Assists of the Week,” the league posted.

Mitchell's featured play came during a recent blowout win over the Las Vegas Aces. Natasha Howard had the ball while being guarded by A’ja Wilson. Mitchell made a sharp back cut, and Howard threaded a perfect pass for a layup at the rim.

Also featured in the video were Chelsea Gray of Las Vegas, Sabrina Ionescu (twice) and Marine Johannes of the New York Liberty and Courtney Williams of the Minnesota Lynx.

Howard continues to shine for Indiana. The former Florida State Seminoles standout was the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2019. Since then, she’s built a strong career, including three WNBA championships with Minnesota and Seattle between 2017 and 2020.

This season, Howard is contributing 11.7 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. The Fever have three home games remaining in their current five-game homestand. The next game is at noon ET Wednesday against the Golden State Valkyries. It will be televised by NBA TV.
