Sophie Cunningham marked her long-awaited return on Saturday for the Indiana Fever. The last time the 29-year-old saw action on the court was on August 17, 2025, in a regular-season game against the Connecticut Sun. She tore the MCL in her right knee in that game, which required season-ending surgery.

It has been a lengthy rehab for the 6-foot-1 guard, but she was finally rewarded for her hard work on Saturday. She took the court for the first time in eight months as the Fever took on the New York Liberty in their first preseason game. It was well worth the wait for Cunningham.

Cunningham got the start for head coach Stephanie White on Saturday. She played 14 minutes in the exhibition game, finishing with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting, two rebounds, an assist, two steals and three triples.

It wasn’t exactly a mind-blowing comeback performance for Cunningham, but it was enough to help lead the Fever to a lopsided 109-91 road victory against New York.

Sophie Cunningham’s personal request before Indiana Fever return

Cunningham took to social media ahead of Saturday’s contest. She made a personal request to her fans right before her highly anticipated return to the court. The former Missouri Tigers star also asked for some prayers ahead of the new WNBA season.

“I have been dying to say this,” Cunningham said in a video posted on Instagram. “It’s finally game day. Preseason, we’re here in New York. We’re healthy. Huge, it feels so good to be back.

“If you have an extra five to ten seconds, a minute, go ahead and cover our team in prayer, cover our league in prayer for a healthy, fun season. Can’t wait, see you guys there.”

Cunnningham had no setbacks in her first game back. She didn’t look rusty either, which is a testament to all the hard work she put into her conditioning throughout the offseason.

Cunningham and the Fever will be back in action on Thursday for their next preseason game. They will return home to host Paige Bueckers the Dallas Wings. Tip-off from Gainbridge Fieldhouse is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.
