The Indiana Fever signed six-time All-Star DeWanna Bonner to a one-year deal this offseason, and hopes were high that the veteran forward would be a real difference-maker alongside the likes of Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston.
Bonner averaged 15.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game with the Connecticut Sun last season, but so far, through five games (three starts), she's putting up just 6.2 points per game. To be fair, her playing time is down -- she's averaging just 22 minutes per game, whereas she played 31.8 minutes per game last season -- but she hasn't had the influence the team hoped she would.
Alexa Philippou of ESPN listed four players "who switched teams but have yet to break through in 2025," and Bonner made the short list.
"Bonner's role was always bound to be different in Indiana, where she's appearing alongside a dominant big three with preexisting chemistry, than it was with the Connecticut Sun, where getting her looks was a priority of the offense," Philippou wrote on May 29, adding:
"Coach Stephanie White has said Bonner is getting accustomed to playing in a faster-paced system, and that with so much of Indiana's offense predicated on playing with freedom and off instinct, Bonner and her teammates are still learning one another."
Bonner did put up 21 points in Indiana's 83-77 loss to the Washington Mystics on May 28, but Philippou still thinks the Fever's new addition is worth monitoring as the season progresses.
A two-time WNBA champion, Bonner was one of several key additions for Indiana this offseason. The Fever also signed forward Natasha Howard and added guard Sophie Cunningham via trade.
Prior to joining the Fever, Bonner averaged 14.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.3 assists a game. Indiana hosts the winless Sun on May 30, so Bonner will have another opportunity to impress against a not-so-stellar opponent.
