After Sophie Cunningham joined the Indiana Fever via trade in the 2025 offseason, she has developed a close relationship with Caitlin Clark. They have bonded well on and off the court, with Cunningham even joining the All-Star playmaker at a golf event during the past offseason.
Earlier in August, Clark and Cunningham, along with Lexie Hull, also drew plenty of attention when they made a video reviewing Canadian snacks ahead of their game against the Toronto Tempo.
Sure enough, it’s safe to say that Cunningham has learned about Clark on a more personal level even though it has been less than two years since they became teammates.
Now, during a conversation with Colin Cowherd on his podcast, Cunningham offered a glimpse into Clark’s personality away from the spotlight.
Cunningham described her as someone who’s almost completely focused on basketball. While comparisons to legends like Michael Jordan, Stephen Curry and Larry Bird continue to surround the Fever star, Cunningham believes her teammate is much simpler off the court.
After Cowherd praised the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year and how her game resembled that of the game’s legends, Cunningham said that Clark is “strictly basketball” on the court and is “very simple” off it.
“I look at her, and I think she’s got Jordan’s ascension, Curry’s game, and Larry Bird’s personality,” Cowherd said. “Am I wrong?”
In response, Cunningham stated, “No, I don’t think you are. I think that Larry Bird honestly might have a little bit more sass. Caitlin is just her own, her own personality, like especially off the court, like she is strictly basketball.”
Clark’s personality has helped her handle the enormous pressure surrounding her career and maintain a sense of normalcy throughout the years. Cunningham emphasized this point, noting how her teammate is different from what people can see.
“She loves to sit on the couch. She loves to watch TV. She’s very simple. It’s been a blessing that she has been in our league,” Cunningham added.
Although Clark’s growing legacy will be defined by what she accomplishes on the court, Cunningham’s perspective on her offers another reason for fans to remain fascinated by the Fever star. For all the attention surrounding Indiana’s franchise player, she remains a person with whom anyone can readily relate off the court.
