Chennedy Carter came off a solid 2023-24 season where she led the Chicago Sky roster in points and ranked third in assists. She was a key figure for the Sky last season, averaging 17.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.1 steals.
However, the Sky fell short of a playoff spot, due in part to then-rookie Angel Reese’s season-ending injury. After a rather disappointing 13-27 campaign last season, Sky GM Jeff Pagliocca could be looking to shake things up within the team during the offseason.
On Monday, WNBA reporter Annie Costabile confirmed that the Sky’s front office had made qualifying offers to Michaela Onyenwere, Dana Evans, and Nikolina Milic, but did not include Carter in the list.
In an article Costabile wrote for the Chicago Sun-Times published on Saturday, she pointed out two possible reasons Chennedy Carter could miss out on an offer.
“There are questions about her commitment to the team on the court and its culture off it that could contribute to the Sky being unwilling to even make the offer,” wrote Costabile.

The insider also highlighted the fact that the Sky has the No. 3 pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft. Several highly rated college guards would be available in the first three potential draft picks, including UConn’s Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd and Notre Dame’s Olivia Miles, who many say could be an interesting player to pair with Reese.
WNBA teams can make qualifying offers and assign “core designations” until Jan. 20, and can start talking with free agents to negotiate a deal from Jan. 21 onwards. Free agents will be officially able to sign contracts with teams starting Feb. 1.
The Sky fired coach Teresa Weatherspoon in September last year, replacing her with Tyler Marsh. Their new head coach will be looking to build the roster around Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso, and could look for established veterans in the free agency pool.
It seems that the famous trio of the Chicago Sky—Chennedy Carter, Angel Reese, and Kamilla Cardoso—is about to disband soon. Carter, the leading scorer of the Sky last season, was excluded from qualifying offers, causing quite a stir in the world of women’s basketball. Now a restricted free agent, Carter is left to test the trade market.
Reese was among the first to react to the news, saying “Everything happens for a reason” in her post on X.

In her following post that hinted support for Carter, the “Chi-Town Barbie” said, “Everybody is in your life for a reason & a season!”

Reese has previously called Carter “one of the best guards in this league,” expressing her respect for the free agent. Despite the ongoing controversy, the Sky star believes that change can lead to new and better opportunities.
