The Phoenix Mercury will be without three key players on Monday night against the Dallas Wings. Kahleah Copper, Satou Sabally, and Lexi Held have all been ruled out due to injury.
Copper, who erupted for a season-high 33 points in the Mercury’s 98-89 loss to Dallas last week, is sidelined with a right hamstring strain. Sabally remains out with a right ankle injury and is considered day-to-day after being seen in a walking boot earlier this week. Held has been ruled out with a pneumothorax.
Phoenix (12-6) will now look to avoid its first three-game losing streak of the season while operating without two of its top scoring threats and a key reserve.
The Wings (6-13) have injury concerns of their own. Four players remain out: DiJonai Carrington (rib), Arike Ogunbowale (left thumb), Tyasha Harris (left knee), and Maddy Siegrist (right knee). Harris is out for the season, while the others continue to rehab with no confirmed return dates.
Carrington and Ogunbowale did not travel with the team to Phoenix, sources told DallasHoopsJournal.com, and may also miss Wednesday’s game at Chicago. Siegrist, who did make the trip, has progressed to light on-court work following chair-based rehab activity but remains without a timetable.
Carrington suffered her injury during Dallas’ June 20 win over Connecticut while drawing a charge. She has averaged 11.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 14 appearances. Ogunbowale last played on June 28, when she injured her thumb in a win over the Mystics. The All-Star guard is averaging 16.8 points and 3.9 assists this season.
“Unique, just being extremely cautious and trusting our medical team,” head coach Chris Koclanes said of the team’s injury management approach.
With several veterans sidelined, Dallas has leaned on a rookie-heavy lineup. First-year players Paige Bueckers, Aziaha James, JJ Quinerly, and Luisa Geiselsöder started Thursday’s win over Phoenix alongside Li Yueru. James scored a career-best 28 points with five made threes, Quinerly added 17 points and seven assists, and Bueckers contributed 23 points and five assists.
“We came out and punched first,” Quinerly said. “We got up the floor quick, got into transition, and got some quick shots up. That gave us confidence, and we just kept building.”
Phoenix leads the all-time series 49-33. Monday’s game is the third of four regular-season meetings between the teams. The final contest will take place Sept. 11 in Arlington.
