The Indiana Fever have opened up the 2025 WNBA season with a 4-4 start, recently picking up a win over Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky. However, the've been hit with injury bug.
Caitlin Clark has missed the last four games with a left quadriceps strain, and Sophie Cunningham has now missed a total of four games on the year. She picked up an ankle injury in the team's preseason finale on May 10 and reaggravated it on May 30 against the Connecticut Sun.
That Sun game wasn't an easy one for her. Not only did she hurt her ankle again but she also chipped one of her front teeth.
The former Phoenix Mercury guard vented about her struggles on social media on Sunday afternoon, admitting life has not been easy recently but she's going to keep smiling.
"life has been kickin my flat little booty this past month," Cunningham said. "injury. lies. injury. my tooth or lack there of. things just kept happening one after another, yet, through the frustrations, being annoyed, and straight up being exhausted on all fronts, he is faithful. so keep on keepin on. find the joy. do the right thing anyways. show up with good energy. be thankful your character and patience is getting tested. keep smiling. this is all part of the funnnn so embrace it all! it’s all gonna be ok… i think."
After posting the message, Fever teammate and now close friend Lexie Hull made sure Cunningham knew she wasn’t alone. Hull showed her support in the comment section with a joke.
"Unpopular opinion but I think I like you more with the cracked tooth ," Hull wrote.
Cunningham's openness about her recent ups and downs provides another reminder that athletes face their challenges, too.
While an exact return date has not been announced, Cunningham and the Fever remain optimistic she’ll be back soon. For now, the 6-foot-1 guard is considered day-to-day.
The Indiana Fever take on the Atlanta Dream at the Gateway Center on Tuesday, June 10th, with tip-off at 7:30 pm EST.
