The New York Liberty are getting some tough injury news, ahead of a key game Saturday with the Connecticut Sun. New York will be without star Sabrina Ionescu for the contest, per Yahoo Sports.
“She’ll be day-to-day and they hope she’ll be able to play on Tuesday in Chicago,” reporter Jackie Powell posted to X, formerly Twitter.
Ionescu is averaging 16 points per game this season. Her New York team holds a 21-14 record on the season, heading into Saturday. The Liberty guard also averages four rebounds per game.
Ionescu has an ankle injury. She tweaked her ankle on Thursday. The Liberty currently believe the injury isn’t too serious.
“She’s gonna be out today, and she’s day-to-day. We think she’ll be okay for Chicago, but again day-to-day, so we’ll see,” Liberty head coach Chris DeMarco said, per WNBA reporter Myles Ehrlich.
This is tough news for the Liberty. New York is already down one player, as Satou Sabally stepped away from the team recently. She is focusing on her health after suffering a concussion.
“As with all our players, health will always be the focus,” DeMarco said about Sabally, per ABC-7 news in New York City. “We look forward to getting her back. She’s just going to take some time right now.”
The Liberty must now find a way to win without some of their key players. Both Sabally and Ionescu are averaging double-figures in scoring this season. The Liberty must have other players step up to lift the offense.
Connecticut enters the game with a 8-24 record on the season.
