Marina Mabrey and the Toronto Tempo lost to the Dallas Wings on Sunday, 89-76. It was Toronto's second straight defeat, dropping the team to 9-11 on the season.
Mabrey led the Tempo in scoring with 19 points on 7-of-18 shooting, to go along with five rebounds, five assists, one steal and one block. Unfortunately, no other Toronto player recorded more than 15 points, with the next best scorer being Nyara Sabally with 14.
In comparison, Paige Bueckers tallied 22 points for Dallas, while Azzi Fudd added 17. All Wings starters reached double digits in scoring as well.
To make matters worse for Mabrey, she received a technical foul in the second quarter of the contest. The referees assessed her with a tech after she got tangled up with Arike Ogunbowale and hurt the left arm of the Wings guard.
It was Mabrey's second technical foul of the season, which puts her in line for a $500 fine. The WNBA rules state that a player's first three technical fouls each carry a $500 fine, while the fourth through seventh cost $1,000 each. Anything beyond that is punishable with a $1,500 fine and a one-game suspension.
Unsurprisingly, Mabrey was not happy with the tech. She shared as much in a post on Threads after the game. She also jokingly said that Ogunbowale should pay her fine.
"Broooo that’s not a tech. But Arike should pay my fine," Mabrey wrote. It's worth noting that Mabrey and Ogunbowale were college teammates at Notre Dame and entered the league at the same time in 2019.
For what it's worth, Ogunbowale responded to Mabrey's post and mentioned how the Tempo star nearly broker her arm, so she "ain't paying" the fine.
The Tempo return to action against the Golden State Valkyries on Wednesday. Sure enough, Mabrey will need to be careful if she wants to avoid paying another fine.
