PHOENIX — Duquesne Univerity senior guard Megan McConnell wants to prove doubters wrong and earn her spot on the Phoenix Mercury roster.

The senior has seen success in her collegiate years, playing for Duquesne for the past five seasons. She ranks first in steals in the NCAA Division 1 and earned Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year honors. McConnell also comes from a basketball family, many of who’ve played or have been involved in the sport from high school to the Olympics.

“I have a great support system,” McConnell told the media during training camp on Tuesday, mentioning the amount of texts she received after her first day with the Mercury. “It just runs deep and I’m really thankful for that.”

McConnell’s brother, T.J. McConnell, was in a similar position fighting for a roster spot in the NBA. McConnell intends to do the same as her brother and continue to work for a chance at a spot with the Mercury.

“We have this mindset and this motto of proving people wrong,” McConnell explained. “Undrafted [or] drafted, it doesn’t matter. Just go in and just keep proving people wrong and work hard… That’s what [T.J.] did and that’s what I’m trying to do.”
