SAN FRANCISCO — The Phoenix Mercury look to keep riding the wave of momentum as they head to California to visit the Golden State Valkyries for the first time in franchise history on Monday evening.
Phoenix Preview
The Mercury won their last matchup, defeating the Minnesota Lynx, 79-71, on July 9. Phoenix went on a 19-4 run in the fourth quarter to stun the first-place Lynx. While the Mercury has been known to be shooter-friendly from beyond the arc this season, they were only one for 16 and made most of their points from the field.
Phoenix forward Alyssa Thomas scored a career-high of 29 points in the win and had her first triple-double as a Mercury — the 16th of her career.
Phoenix is 14-6 and second in the Western Conference.
Golden State Preview
The Valkyries come off a loss against the Las Vegas Aces, 104-102, on July 12. Both teams played a close game and were tied in the fourth quarter with 1:49 left. However, Golden State couldn’t stop Las Vegas’ Jackie Young as she made her team’s last 10 points for the win.
Janelle Salaun led scoring for the Valkyries with 16 points, shooting 46.2% from the field and 20.0% from three.
Golden State is now 10-10 and fourth in the Western Conference.
Previous Encounter
The Mercury and the Valkyries last met on June 5, where the Mercury took an 86-77 win at home. Phoenix’s Lexi Held had a career-high in points against Golden State, scoring 24 points.
