Paige Bueckers’ highly anticipated WNBA debut hasn’t gone according to script. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft has hit her first major roadblock, as the Dallas Wings announced that their star rookie has entered concussion protocol following a tough loss to the Chicago Sky.
Bueckers suffered the injury during Thursday night’s 97-92 defeat, when she appeared to bump heads with veteran guard Courtney Vandersloot in the final minute of the second quarter. Initially, the impact didn’t raise concern—but postgame symptoms did.
“She didn’t really say anything, and then after the game she said she was feeling like she had a headache,” Wings head coach Chris Koclanes told reporters. “That was the first of it, and once that was said, she went right to the doctor to make sure we’re not missing anything.”
The Wings are taking a cautious approach, citing the need to reduce travel fatigue and prioritize her recovery. Bueckers will be re-evaluated after Tuesday’s game against the Seattle Storm, which she’s expected to miss, along with Saturday’s rematch against the Sky.
Despite the team’s struggles—Dallas has opened the season at 1-6 and sits tied with the Connecticut Sun for the worst record— Paige Bueckers has shown flashes of brilliance on the court. Through six games, she’s averaging 14.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 6.7 assists, numbers that still keep her in the Rookie of the Year conversation.
But her absence may create space for another rising star to steal the spotlight: Sonia Citron.
The third overall pick out of Notre Dame is making a strong case for Rookie of the Year honors, becoming the first rookie from the 2025 class to reach 100 points. She’s averaging 14.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists through seven games for the Washington Mystics—and gaining serious traction.
Still, betting platforms like FanDuel continue to list Paige Bueckers as the frontrunner for the award, acknowledging her overall impact and potential once healthy.
With Bueckers sidelined, the Wings are in survival mode early in the season. The hope is that the former UConn superstar can bounce back quickly—not just to help Dallas climb out of the basement, but to reclaim her spot as the league’s top rookie.
Until then, the WNBA world watches and waits for Paige’s return.
