The Phoenix Mercury are set for a busy week of basketball as they have four games in the next six days, beginning with a matchup against the undefeated, 5-0 Connecticut Sun on Tuesday night.
Traveling over to Uncasville, Connecticut, the Mercury will face currently the best team in the WNBA without up to three of their players.
DOUBTFUL – Sug Sutton (Right Ankle)
OUT – Bec Allen (NWT – Concussion Protocol)
OUT – Brittney Griner (Left Foot –Toe)
Not catching a break health-wise, Sutton was available and played in Phoenix’s game vs. the Dallas Wings on Saturday despite being listed as questionable with a left elbow injury beforehand. Now she has suffered a right ankle injury and there is a slim chance that she will be good to go on Tuesday.
Allen is not with the team as she is in concussion protocol. Against the Wings, she took a hard fall on the court while defending in the third quarter and was in serious pain, suffering a head injury. Like Sutton, Allen has been injured multiple times this season as she sustained both a hip injury during the preseason and a back injury before being able to play vs. the Atlanta Dream.
Since Allen was traded to the Mercury in the offseason, she has started in all five games this season through this point. Expect Sophie Cunningham or Kiki Herbert Harrigan to fill in for Allen in the starting lineup for the time being.
Showing progression in her recovery process, Griner was seen without a walking boot at the Mercury’s shootaround on Saturday prior to their game. But as Phoenix was warming up, the 6-foot-9 superstar was back wearing the boot and remains out, still having yet to make her 2024 season debut.

If Sutton is to be ruled out, that will leave Phoenix’s head coach Nate Tibbetts with eight players in his squad available and healthy. It will be interesting to see if general manager Nick U’Ren decides to bring in another player for depth since even if the team was fully healthy, they still have an open roster spot.
Once Sutton’s status becomes more clear regarding whether she will be active or inactive against the Sun, Burn City Sports will keep you updated. The game between Mercury and Sun begins on Tuesday at 4 p.m. PT.
