It appears the Azzi Fudd era for the Dallas Wings is off to a turbulent start.

The Wings bolstered their backcourt this April by using the No. 1 pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft on Fudd. It was confirmed last year that she's dating her new teammate, former UConn star Paige Bueckers. With that being said, she was asked about their relationship during Thursday's press conference.

"Paige announced last year on TikTok that y'all were a couple," Kevin Sherrington of The Dallas Morning News said. "I'm wondering if that's still the case, and if so, have you talked to other couples in the league about how they negotiate that dynamic?"

Before Fudd could even respond to that question, a public relations staffer for the Wings chimed in to let reporters know that any and all personal questions are off limits.

"I understand why you have to ask that question," the Wings staff member replied. "We're going to respectfully decline from commenting on our players' personal lives."

On Thursday night, Sherrington made it clear that he won't apologize for asking Fudd this question. In fact, he believes the Wings are at fault for how they handled this situation.

"If anyone's at fault here, it's the Wings, who acted as if they were covering for something that didn't need hiding," Sherrington said.

Judging by the responses on social media, plenty of WNBA fans agree with Sherrington.

"To be fair to the reporter, the Wings should’ve let everyone know in advance not to ask the questions and they should’ve known there would be some," one fan commented.

"The question was fair and better than the pre-draft interviewer asking players their favorite WNBA couple. How could she not be prepared for that question? Is my question?" an Instagram user wrote.

"He’s right don’t bring a partner to ya team and expect not to be asked about that it’s unprofessional and you was the number 1 pick," another fan said.

"Good PR turns a story into a non-story. If you’re deep in the WBB space you know these two are a couple," one person argued. "It’s non-story. But the Wings PR made it into a bigger story."

Azzi Fudd won't let this bring down her excitement.

When Fudd was selected No. 1 overall on Monday night, she made it known that she can't wait to reunite with Bueckers on the court.

"Paige is an incredible player, everyone knows that," Fudd said. "She's someone that makes playing basketball with easy."

Bueckers cruised to Rookie of the Year last season, averaging 19.2 points, 5.4 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game.

The Wings begin their 2026 season on May 9 against the Indiana Fever. We can't wait to see how the duo of Bueckers and Fudd performs under the bright lights.
