Los Angeles Sparks forward Rickea Jackson hasn’t played in her team’s past two games. The team initially listed her absence as due to “personal” reasons, but given her reduced role this season and some notable social media activity, speculation quickly spread about what was going on.

On Tuesday, Jackson addressed the media and offered a direct, candid response, dispelling several rumors and shedding light on her mindset.

Rickea Jackson Clears the Air on Her Absence

After being sidelined for two games, Jackson clarified that her time away wasn’t the result of team friction or anything off-court, beyond what she described as a combination of personal needs and health.

“I mean, we’re here to win. Personal time was needed, concussion, lingering things,” Jackson said. “But just happy to be back with my team.”

The 2024 No. 4 overall pick has experienced a shifting role under new head coach Lynne Roberts. Jackson has averaged 7.0 points this season—down from 13.4 as a rookie—and lost her starting spot upon returning from concussion protocol. Her last game came on May 27, where she went scoreless in 12 minutes off the bench.

Still, she emphasized that she remains focused on contributing: “I’m here. I’m showing up. That’s all that matters to me right now.”

Jackson’s absence, paired with changes to her Instagram bio and following list, led to widespread online theories—some of which she directly confronted.

“Whatever sounds the juiciest, that’s what people want to go with. Like, I’m pregnant apparently,” Jackson said, mocking the most circulated (and baseless) rumor.

Jackson also challenged the media’s role in amplifying speculation, expressing frustration with how unverified rumors, especially those targeting WNBA players, can spread rapidly online and be treated as fact without accountability.

“You’ve just got to be realistic with yourself,” Jackson said. “Like, at the end of the day, media isn’t about facts anymore… so that’s just the media. Just taking it with a grain of salt, and not being gullible.”

While some fans pointed out that Jackson allegedly unfollowed the Sparks on Instagram and removed the team from her bio, she said that’s not indicative of any tension.

“I’ve never followed any team I’ve played for since AAU. I like to follow real people,” Jackson said. “But you know, rumors are rumors.”

On Coaching and Chemistry: “Everything Is New Here”

Jackson also addressed questions about her relationship with head coach Lynne Roberts and how she’s adjusting to a new system in her second year.

“Yeah, it’s growing,” she said. “Everything is new here. New system, new everything. So it takes time, but chemistry is built in time.”

Roberts echoed that sentiment recently, reaffirming her belief in Jackson’s place on the team.

“Rickea is a big part of our organization and our team,” Roberts said. “She’s taking personal time, and we support her. We’re excited to get her back when she’s ready to be back.”

Despite a reduced role and online noise, Jackson made clear she’s still committed to the Sparks—and not afraid to speak for herself.
