The Phoenix Mercury knocked out the defending champions, the New York Liberty, in the playoffs last season. A trio of superstars, Sabrina Ionescu, Breanna Stewart, and Jonquel Jones, looked ineffective during the series.
The franchise took ultimate revenge, taking Mercury’s prized asset, Satou Sabally, in the offseason and doubling the impact with back-to-back wins early in the 2026 season. While Sabally’s absence massively impacted Mercury’s performance in the season, the Liberty didn’t even need her complete core to beat them.
Sab played in just one game so far and was once again on the sidelines for the game against the Mercury. But her team’s control in the game excited her as she cheered every possession and even, on one occasion, trolled the opponent’s travel violation.

Interestingly, the 27-year-old was out of action due to a back injury, but her actions and quickness didn’t show any effect of such an injury.
In the earlier match-up, Marine Johannes had a career night with seven three-pointers and 21 points in the game. In the recent game, Pauline Astier led the side with 16 points. While the back-court duo is doing great for the Liberty team, everyone is waiting for an update on the four-time All-Star.
Two wins in a row gave the Liberty’s record a bit of a respectable look, but the franchise needs to get their star players back in action, at least the regular starter Ionescu, to have control over games.
Answering reporters about her possible return, coach DeMarco said, “It’s something that’s been bothering her a little bit. But I don’t know if it was a tweak or what happened. Just know she’s working to get back to the next one.”

Q: What's up with Sabrina's back?
"She's just sore. She's day-to-day right now."
Q: The back is so central, does it have to do with her foot, overcompensating that hurt her back?
"Not that I know of."
Q: Is it something that came up this…
He added that the sharpshooter guard is on a day-to-day status and characterized the injury as sore. Fans will be waiting for her return as the former champions are looking to get back to a strong run in the season.
