Without question, the Seattle Storm losing Nneka Ogwumike, Skylar Diggins, and Gabby Williams in free agency was no surprise to many. Seattle will look different under first-year head coach Sonia Raman in the upcoming WNBA season. Following the WNBA Draft last Monday, the future looks bright in the Emerald City.
The team took 6′ 4″ center Awa Fam of Spain with the third overall pick, giving the Storm a young and formidable duo with Dominque Malonga. Malonga went second overall in last year’s draft as veterans Ezi Magbegor and Stefanie Dolson round out a solid front court. Back to Fam, the 19 year-old is averaging 7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.8 assists with the Valencia Basket Club this season.
Next, Duke guard Taina Mair was selected No. 14 overall by the Storm. Mair averaged 11.6 points, 5.9 boards, and 5.6 assists per game with the Blue Devils last season. She led the ACC with 201 assists and third in steals with 89.
Seattle drafted TCU guard/forward Marta Suarez at No. 16. However, in a stunning move, Suarez was dealt to the Golden State Valkyries for LSU guard Flau’jae Johnson, who went No. 8 overall. Michigan State forward Grace VanSlooten was the final pick for Seattle at No. 39 overall. Last season, VanSlooten averaged 15.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, added 2.3 assists in 32 games for the Spartans.

As training camp is underway, the question now shifts to who will make the 14-player roster for Seattle. Here, it’s important to note that Johnson has yet to sign a Rookie Scale Contract. Yet, all signs point to her being on the roster this season.
This offseason, the team signed guards Jade Melbourne, Natisha Hiedeman, Zia Cooke along with a returning Lexie Brown . What’s more, drafting Mair and acquiring Johnson while signing guards Jayln Brown and Elle Ladine to rookie deals further adds to the competition.
Shifting to back court, the signings of Dolson and forward Katie Lou Samuelson in addition to Jordan Horston adds depth and experience. Seattle also signed guard/fowards Rennia Davis and Jaelyn Brown to training camp contracts as they did with forward Beatrice Mompremier.
