Sophie Cunningham’s bonding with Indiana Fever rookie turns heads

The Indiana Fever re-signed Sophie Cunningham to a one-year deal in WNBA free agency. The 6-foot-1 guard was a key addition to the squad last season. She has an imposing physical presence on both ends of the floor, while also serving as a legitimate threat from beyond the arc.

However, beyond her contributions on the basketball court, the Fever also retained her services for her impact on her teammates. A veteran who is now entering her eighth season in the WNBA, Cunningham has emerged as a vocal leader for the Fever both on and off the court.

Much like she did last season, the Fever also expect Cunningham to help guide the rookies on the squad this year.

Cunningham is already making her presence felt in training camp. On Monday, a video of the 29-year-old with rookie Raven Johnson made its rounds on social media. In it, Cunningham is seen having an endearing moment with the Fever’s 10th overall pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft.

Cunningham’s behavior around Johnson quickly turned heads on X.

“There is not a better supportive teammate than Sophie Cunningham no matter what team she plays on,” a comment read.

“Love to see that. Every rook needs a vet to take them under their wing and be there to help navigate the ups and downs of the first year as a pro,” another said.

“I bet Sophie wont let any other players mistreat Raven,” a user suggested.

“Bash Sisters,” a reaction read.

“Sophie is just such a nice person,” said another.

“Awwww this is such a girls girl moment ” a fan wrote.

There are big expectations for Johnson heading into her rookie year. The reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Year could potentially provide a significant upgrade to the team’s backcourt.

The good news for Johnson is that she already has Cunningham in her corner.
