It was a frustrating Game 1 on Sunday for Stephanie White and the Indiana Fever. They lost 102-85 to the Las Vegas Aces at Michelob Ultra Arena and now have their backs against the wall entering Game 2 on Tuesday. The veteran head coach addressed the media during her postgame availability and she received backlash from WNBA fans for her comments.

Aliyah Boston delivered a strong performance, recording 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Caitlin Clark backed her with 15 points and 10 assists, while Raven Johnson and Sophie Cunningham combined for 27 bench points. However, Kelsey Mitchell struggled and had a rare off night. She finished with 12 points on 4-of-16 shooting.

A’ja Wilson spearheaded the Aces’ charge with a game-high 38 points on 15-of-19 shooting. She added 16 rebounds, two steals and four blocks. Jackie Young contributed 21 points and 10 rebounds, and Chelsea Gray chipped in 14 points, five rebounds and eight assists.

Indiana Fever: Fans criticize Stephanie White for postgame comments

White shared her thoughts about the loss to the media. She emphasized that it should humble her team and that it’s something they can all learn from.

“It’s experience,” White said. “Certainly, there’s no substitute for experience. Some of them got it a year ago. But oftentimes, you have to be humbled. That’s life, right? You don’t always learn from the successes (but) you learn from being humbled. So I think for us, we know. We felt the difference in the intensity level.”

However, fans criticized her, stressing that it’s a short series and that Game 1 was their best chance to upset the defending champions.

“White wasn’t exactly a scholar at Purdue. Her HC record at Vanderbilt needs to be made into a documentary on futility,” one user commented.

“Coaching malpractice. THEY DONT HAVE TIME TO BE HUMBLE,” a reaction read.

“Her choice of words is ridiculous. Humbled?” one fan said.

“She is gaslighting – it’s so gross and so obvious and terrible to see in a coach,” posted another.

“If getting knocked out of the playoffs in two games, gets rid of White, bring it on,” another fan wrote.

“White needs to be out of the coaching job,” a comment read.

White and the Fever will need to move on from the Game 1 defeat quickly. They only have one day to regroup and prepare for the do-or-die game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. It won’t be easy to tie the series, but the team will feed off the home crowd’s energy to help them extend the first round matchup to a winner-take-all Game 3.
