The Golden State Valkyries pulled off a massive win on Sunday night as they took down the Indiana Fever in a home game at Chase Center, 75-63.
It was a battle between two teams that are still fighting to secure their spot in the WNBA playoffs, and it was the Valkyries that inched closer toward this goal after Sunday’s victory. Golden State climbed to the No. 6 spot with a 21-18 record, while Indiana fell to eighth at 21-19.
It was also a duel between two of the top coaches in the league. Fever shot-caller Stephanie White, who won the Coach of the Year title in 2023 with the Connecticut Sun, faced off against Natalie Nakase of the Valkyries, who is considered one of the frontrunners for Coach of the Year honors in her first season as a head coach.
Before the Fever and the Valkyries faced off on the court, White made her opinion of Nakase crystal clear.
"I think she's done an outstanding job," White said of Nakase during the former's pregame media availability session. "You even think back to her and [GM Ohemaa Nyanin] and what they've done in terms of putting the team together. The right pieces that fit together that play the style that they want to play on both ends of the floor. That has experience and players who know how to know and understand to play a role in this league.
"They've put together a really good, tough squad. I think she's done an outstanding job."
White had some high praise for her compatriot here, and for good reason. As the Fever coach said, Nakase has done an incredible job in building a roster from scratch — one that has proven itself capable of competing against the rest of the league even though this is the Valkyries' inaugural season.
Not many had high expectations for Golden State before the campaign started, but this team is now on the brink of securing a playoff berth in its first year in the WNBA. There’s no denying that Nakase deserves a ton of credit for all this.
