For star guard Kelsey Mitchell, the 2025 season got off to a rough start. Through six games, she was averaging 16.3 points but shooting just 38.7% from the field and 29.0% from the 3-point line, well below her career averages coming into the season, which stood at 42.6% from the field and 37.8% from the 3-point line.
But in her last two games, with the Fever reeling because they're playing without star guard Caitlin Clark (injured quad), Mitchell has come through with big performances, averaging 20.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists on 12-for-25 shooting from the field and 5-for-13 shooting from the 3-point line.
That earned her a major acknowledgement from the WNBA. She was named the Eastern Conference player of the week on Tuesday.
Coach Stephanie White let the team know the news at practice, and as she said, "Congratulations, Eastern Conference player of the week," she seemed to catch Mitchell by surprise.
"I thought I did something wrong," Mitchell said as her teammates cheered.
The Fever shared the moment on Twitter/X: "Head coach Stephanie White & the squad surprised Kelsey Mitchell after shootaround today to celebrate her being named @WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week."

Indiana is still awaiting the return of Clark, who will not play on Tuesday night with the Fever preparing to face the Dream in Atlanta. Clark's quad injury appears to have gotten better, but she has not played in more than two weeks, and the team wants her to get into game condition before she takes the floor again.
