Caitlin Clark's season is officially over. The Indiana Fever star herself announced the news after the team met to talk about her status on Thursday.
In a post on social media, Clark expressed her disappointment and frustration that she wouldn't be able to come back to help the team. However, she did share her appreciation for the fans who have rallied behind her and the team amid the challenging time.
"I had hoped to share a better update, but I will not be returning to play this season. I spent hours in the gym every day with the singular goal of getting back out there, disappointed isn’t a big enough word to describe how I am feeling," Clark wrote.
"I want to thank everyone who had my back through all the uncertainty. This has been incredibly frustrating, but even in the bad, there is good. The way the fans continued to show up for me, and for the Fever, brought me so much joy and important perspective. I am so proud of how this team has only gotten stronger through adversity this year. Now it’s time to close out the season and claim our spot in the Playoffs."

Clark had not played since July 15 due to a right groin injury. Initially, there were hopes that she could return toward the end of the season as Indiana fought for a playoff spot. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case, with Fever general manager Amber Cox noting that "time is not on our side."
According to the Fever exec, while Clark is recovering from her injury, they weren't confident that the remaining time they have is enough to get the star guard back to game-ready condition.
Clark has not been able to perform contact drills with Indiana, according to Chloe Peterson of IndyStar. But, the team needed to make a decision about her status with the season ending on Sept. 11 and the playoffs starting on Sept. 14.
"Caitlin has worked so hard throughout this time, doing everything possible to recover and return to the court but, ultimately, time is not on our side," Cox shared, via the team's website.
"While we will continue working with Caitlin and provide her with every resource we have available, there is not enough time left in our season for her to safely return, and her long-term health and well-being remains our top priority. We are looking forward to having her back at full strength to start the 2026 season."
Declaring Clark out for the season should allow the Fever to sign both Aerial Powers and Shey Peddy to regular contracts under the hardship waiver. Had Clark returned, they would have needed to release one of the two.
Clark is the fifth player to suffer a season-ending injury for Indiana, joining Sydney Colson, Aari McDonald, Sophie Cunningham and Chloe Bibby.
