The 2025 WNBA season has taken an unexpected turn for Los Angeles Sparks forward Rickea Jackson, who has now missed two straight games for what the team has labeled “personal” reasons.

Once projected to be a rising star for the franchise, the No. 4 pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft has seen her role shift dramatically this season, from starter to bench contributor, amid an overall dip in production. And now, her extended absence and cryptic social media behavior have drawn speculation from fans, prompting a response from head coach Lynne Roberts.

“Rickea is a big part of our organization and our team,” Roberts said. “She’s taking personal time, and we support her. And we’re excited to get her back when she’s ready to be back.”

A Tough Start and Mounting Speculation

Jackson has appeared in just five games this season, missing three earlier contests due to concussion protocol. In her most recent appearance on May 27 against the Atlanta Dream, she scored zero points in 12 minutes off the bench — a sharp contrast to her rookie year, where she averaged 13.4 points per game on 45.6% shooting.

Through five games in 2025, Jackson is averaging 7.3 points and shooting just 31% from the field. Her reduced playing time and statistical drop-off have raised questions about her fit on the Sparks, particularly after the offseason acquisition of Kelsey Plum, who occupies a similar position on the floor.

Amid her personal leave, fans noticed that Jackson had unfollowed the Sparks on social media and removed team references from her bio, which only further fueled rumors that she might be frustrated with her situation in L.A.

Some online speculation even suggested Jackson might be pregnant — a rumor she addressed directly with humor.

Posting a photo of herself holding a basketball against her stomach with the caption “#ItsAGirl,” Jackson clarified that she is not pregnant, adding, “Y’all come to conclusions every day, it’s hilarious. But I’m a ‘rich auntie’ type of gal.”

Los Angeles Sparks Adjusting Without Her

While Jackson has been away, the Sparks have turned to rookie contributors Sarah Ashlee Barker and Liatu King, both of whom have seen increased minutes in the frontcourt. Coach Roberts has praised their effort, noting the importance of internal development as the roster continues to evolve.

Despite the noise surrounding Jackson’s absence, there has been no official indication of a pending trade or release. The team’s public messaging has remained consistent: they support Jackson, and her return timeline is undetermined.

“We support her,” Roberts reiterated. “And we’re excited to get her back when she’s ready.”

With the Sparks still fighting for early-season momentum and Jackson’s role clearly in flux, her return — and the context around it — remains one of the more intriguing storylines to monitor in the weeks ahead.

Whether her absence is short-term or reflective of deeper dissatisfaction, both Jackson and the organization have made it clear that they’re navigating this quietly, on their terms.
