For the second straight year under head coach Stephanie White, the Indiana Fever failed to compete for the WNBA championship. In fact, the team had a worse postseason result in 2026, losing in the first round after making the semifinals in 2025.
There have been calls for the Fever to fire White as a result, and those demands only intensified on Friday after the team sacked general manager Amber Cox. Indiana also parted ways with team president Kelly Krauskopf earlier in the day.
The Fever, led by Cox and Krauskopf, hired White after removing former Fever head coach Christie Sides following the 2024 season.
According to the latest reports, however, the Fever won’t be firing White. The head coach has one year left on her contract with Indiana, and the team appears prepared to let her contract run its course and evaluate her performance in 2027.
“Head coach Stephanie White is expected to remain in her position, according to a source familiar with the discussion who spoke on the condition of anonymity to preserve relationships,” Annie Costabile of The Athletic reported.
Meghan L. Hall of USA Today corroborated the report, noting that “the person with direct knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports Fever head coach Stephanie White is expected to remain in her role.”
For what it’s worth, the Fever had the best offense in the WNBA in 2026 under White. They had the highest offensive rating (117.0) and scored the most points (4,222) during the campaign.
There’s no denying that Indiana was one of the most entertaining teams to watch during the 2026 season, and perhaps with an improved defense, the team could become a legitimate title contender. That being said, the Fever’s top brass definitely have a reason to believe that White is the right coach for them.
However, considering her contract situation, White’s time with the franchise could be in peril if the Fever continue to struggle in the playoffs.
