The lights are brighter, and camera flashes are everywhere when you come to the WNBA from college basketball. For the Dallas Wings, it’s not just for the player, but also for the coach, as Jose Fernandez took over as head coach right after spending 25 years at the South Florida Bulls.

With record-holder Arike Ogunbowale and impactful veterans and rookies on the team, the coach did a great job finding the balance. There is one thing he might need to work on: his interaction with the media.

WNBA analysts Ros Gold-Onwude and Angel McCoughtry spoke about it on their latest podcast episode. “Can everybody recognize that everybody is coming to the league to do their job. You just got to the pros. So can you develop relationships? Can you also hold the level of professionalism for your young players to see how you talk to the media…. But you’ve got to stop going viral after every single post-game interview,” Gold-Onwude said on the podcast.

Angel McCoughtry even gave him the answer she could have given to the question about Azzi Fudd’s starting role following her incredible game against the New York Liberty. The coach is generally going viral for his answers, where fans even pointed out his mistakes and gaps in his reasoning.

While the 54-year-old is experiencing the WNBA work environment and pressure for the first time, he is still steering the franchise in the right direction at the moment. And individually, it’s altogether a different experience for the coach.

Jose Fernandez Gets Real About His WNBA Experience

In the recent practice session, the coach provided a positive update on the team’s preparations for the upcoming game. While a reporter asked him about his personal experience in the WNBA, he couldn’t hold back his smile.

“You lose so much time, getting a better balance and concentrating on yourself and also getting ready for the next opponent, because you are always playing games,” the coach told the media.

Although that was a very honest and mature answer from Fernandez, her certainly need to make some friends in the media to back him up for his performances in the league and stop avoiding ‘tough’ questions.
