The Chicago Sky just didn’t have enough in the tank to overcome the Seattle Storm in Saturday’s road game at Climate Pledge Arena.
Angel Reese did what she could for the Sky in this one, turning in another strong performance. The two-time All-Star dropped a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double, to go along with two assists, two steals and a block.
Despite Reese’s strong play, Chicago still suffered a 79-69 loss to record their 30th defeat of the season.
The WNBA took to social media shortly after the loss to announce a significant development involving Reese.
“Another milestone for Angel Reese! She records her 10th career game with 20+ points and 10+ rebounds, joining Sylvia Fowles, Candice Dupree, and Elena Delle Donne as the only players in @chicagosky history to reach double-digit 20/10 games,” the league posted on Instagram.
Reese has joined an elite collection of Chicago icons with her latest feat. The fact that the 23-year-old has reached this milestone in just her second season in the WNBA speaks volumes about how consistent Reese has been since turning pro.
In 28 games played this season, Reese has put up averages of 14.4 points on 45.8% shooting, a league-leading 12.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.4 steals in 31.6 minutes per contest.
Unfortunately, Reese’s historic play this season has been far from enough for the Sky. They fell to 9-30 after Saturday’s loss and remain 12th in the league. At the moment, they are just half a game ahead of Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings, who currently occupy the worst record in the WNBA at 9-31.
Last season, in Reese’s debut campaign, the Sky finished with a record of 13-27. Even if Chicago wins all four of its remaining games, it will finish with a worse winning percentage than it did last year.
With Chicago already out of playoff contention, there’s nothing left to play for this year other than pride. The good news for Reese and Co. is that they get to face their rivals, the Indiana Fever, on Friday in a road matchup at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
A road win against the Fever would not change the Sky’s miserable fate this season, but it will surely go a long way in terms of restoring a bit of pride for this team.
