Angel Reese is in a bit of a pickle with the Chicago Sky organization. After erasing doubts, she became their best player as a rookie and continued that trend into this season, even though the team struggled.
This season, the 23-year-old worked with new head coach Tyler Marsh and worked on the role he defined for her. She seemingly adjusted to that quickly enough to place the Sky in fighting positions to win.
Then, when she missed 9 games due to a back injury, the Sky’s problems started to lay themselves bare. Without their 6′ 3″ forward, the team did not have it in them to fight to win games.
That is what she expressed when she gave an interview to The Chicago Tribune. She demanded that the organization bring in players who can help her win, or else she would prefer to move elsewhere.
The Chicago Sky proceeded to suspend her for half a game, and then she did not play the second half, citing a back injury. Now, an anonymous WNBA executive believes Angel Reese should demand a trade.
She needs to get the hell out of there. Chicago is probably the worst-run organization in the league. You’re gonna suspend your best player just because she’s putting pressure on you to get better? That was embarrassing to see. I think Chicago will try to trade her this offseason, but if they don’t, she should request a trade.
WNBA exec told Dallas Hoops Journal
The executive labeling the Chicago Sky as a horribly run organization is not just due to what Reese is facing. Rather, this has been going on for a while, and many former star players have left after several face-offs with the top brass.
There are rumors that Angel Reese informed the Chicago Sky of her reluctance to play in the 2nd half of their game against the Las Vegas Aces. That is what prompted the franchise to notify the league before half-time that she would not play.
The timing of it and Tyler Marsh deflecting questions about her injury seem to indicate that the 23-year-old might not play in their final two regular-season games. Officially, she is currently listed as questionable.
To add fuel to those rumors, the Maryland native has removed her nickname, ‘Chi-Town Barbie,’ from her Instagram page. She has kept her LSU nickname, Bayou Barbie, on her page, which indicates a change could be coming.
Her unhappiness with the entire situation could lead to a tumultuous offseason. After all, there will be a few teams interested in landing the rebounding phenom.
Since the anonymous WNBA executive spoke to the Dallas Hoops Journal, there is enough rumor that it could be Dallas Wings’ Executive Vice President and General Manager, Curt Miller .
If he did indeed ask Angel Reese to demand a trade, it is possible he already has a plan on how to pair her with this year’s No. 1 overall pick, Paige Bueckers.
The two of them are close friends, and the UConn guard’s presence could alleviate some pressure Reese faces. Their current team is geared towards youth, and most of their veteran players have left the team for other opportunities.
The only holdover is Arike Ogunbowale, who could stick around as her elite scoring could be the perfect complement to Bueckers and Reese’s play. Even if she decides to leave, the Wings have enough pieces to build around Reese and Bueckers.
If they can break a trade with the Sky, it could help both teams, as the Wings will get a solid interior presence. The Chicago-based team can focus on building a squad of their choice without the distractions associated with Angel Reese’s meltdown.
