The 2025 WNBA Finals between the Las Vegas Aces and the Phoenix Mercury has been one for the books. From players recording league records to tv ratings.
Not only have the ratings raised eyebrows, but it also tells a story about where women’s basketball is with fans and casual spectators a like.
Game one of the Finals saw some impressive viewership numbers as it was broadcasted on ESPN. ESPN posted the numbers on October 7 on their X account stating: “ESPN scored the most-watched Game 1 of the #WNBAFinals presented by YouTube TV in 28 Years!
“
1.9M avg. viewers | Up 62% YoY
“
WNBA Playoffs up 16% YoY”.

1.9 million viewers is quite a number for viewership, especially when you compare it to last year’s WNBA Finals matchup between 2024 WNBA champion New York Liberty and the Minnesota Lynx.
It will be fascinating to see how much or how little the numbers will change during the remainder of the series between the two teams. The shootout in game 1 captured even the most casual WNBA fan, it left them wanting more.
In game 2, the excitement was dialed down a notch as the Aces cruised to an easy victory over the Mercury.
Although game 2 was one of ease for the Aces, the ratings seem to boast the league’s popularity. It shows there’s a wide reach beyond just the allure of Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever.
Not to discount Clark’s impact of the league’s growth, but the recent boom that the league has seen is due in part to other exciting teams and players that put their all on the line, night in and night out.
With the marketing strategy of teams, players, and signature merchandise and shoes, the league is guaranteed in good hands.
