New York Liberty star Satou Sabally has been sidelined for nearly two months now because of issues surrounding her concussion. As a result, the German star won’t be able to join the national team for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in September.

Sabally, who is averaging 10.4 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.9 assists for New York this season, has not played since getting hurt during the Liberty’s game against the Las Vegas Aces on June 23.

Making matters more concerning, Sabally decided to step away from the team as she recovers from her injury. The team also changed her injury designation from “concussion protocol” to “head,” sparking further fears about her condition.

Now, amid her recovery, Sabally announced on social media that she won’t be joining Germany in the World Cup, noting that she needs to prioritize her health.

While it’s a painful decision for the three-time WNBA All-Star, especially since Germany is hosting this year’s competition, she is just not yet at 100%.

“Dear basketball community in Germany,” Sabally wrote on her Instagram story on Wednesday. “It’s incredibly hard for me to share that I won’t be able to be part of the World Cup in Berlin. Competing at the World Cup at home, in front of you, my family, and with this team is something I’ve worked toward for years.

“Right now, I have to listen to my body, put my health first and prioritize my full recovery. I feel your support for all these years and I’m so grateful for it. I’m incredibly proud of this team and I’ll be with you all in spirit, cheering from afar.”

Considering how long Sabally has been sidelined, and with the World Cup scheduled from Sept. 4-13, there simply is not enough time for her to be fully ready for the competition.

It remains to be seen whether Sabally will be able to rejoin the Liberty this season, especially with the playoffs approaching. Whatever the case may be, though, Sabally’s focus is on her health and making sure there are no lingering issues from her condition.
