WNBA Star Gets Technical Foul Against Las Vegas Aces

DeWanna Bonner, a wing who plays for the Phoenix Mercury, has long been known as a standout defensive player. In fact, she was named to the WNBA's All-Defensive second team in 2015, and overall, she has been named to the All-Star team six times.

On Friday, she faced a stiff test when Phoenix took on A'ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces. Bonner got the assignment of guarding Wilson, the three-time MVP who led the league in scoring and is an outstanding defender herself.

But Bonner couldn't handle Wilson. The latter exploded for 30 points and 16 rebounds in an 86-83 win for the Aces, and the frustration boiled over for Bonner.

Bonner Couldn't Contain Her Frustration

With 5:33 left in the second quarter, Bonner was called for a foul as Wilson grabbed an offensive rebound and attempted a put-back. Bonner complained, and she was hit with a technical foul as a result.

Bonner didn't do too badly on the offensive end, as she contributed 12 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field and four rebounds off the bench.

But she has picked up a few technical fouls lately for showing her frustration on the court. In an early June game against the Washington Mystics, she was called for a personal foul, and she bounced the basketball hard in frustration, which led to her getting T'd up.

Bonner started the season with the Indiana Fever as they hoped to enter the WNBA's upper echelon. But she was waived on June 25, allowing her to relocate to Phoenix shortly afterward.

Her role has been diminished this year, but just last year, she put up 15.0 points a game and earned her most recent All-Star selection.

The Mercury May Be Cooling Off, But They're Still a Threat

Phoenix has now lost two games in a row, but with a 19-13 record, it still has the fourth-best mark in the WNBA. The team trails the Atlanta Dream and the defending world champion New York Liberty in the standings by just 1.5 games.

The Mercury are second in defensive rating and have been getting some outstanding play from newcomer Alyssa Thomas. Thomas, a 6-foot-2 forward, earned her sixth All-Star bid this year and is averaging 16.1 points on 53.8% field-goal shooting, 8.6 rebounds, a league-high 9.0 assists and 1.6 steals a game.

They will get another shot at the Aces, who are in a virtual tie with them in the standings, on Thursday, Aug. 21.
