Welcome to the recap of this week’s AEW Dynamite!
AEW Dynamite aired live from the Music Bayou Center in Houston, Texas. As Blood & Guts approaches, this Dynamite is set to be a major player in the landscape of next week’s Blood & Guts matchups. Tonight’s Dynamite is filled with advantage matches, two for both the men and women. Furthermore, there will be an additional tie-breaker match-up if necessary for either side.
Will the Death Riders continue to act in cowardice? Leading to a loss of an advantage? Or, will Darby Allin get too in over his head? Meanwhile, Megan Bayne seeks further victory and may be leading into Blood & Guts with the advantage.

The night started with Tony Schiavone getting interrupted by Samoa Joe and The Opps. Joe accused Schiavone of being involved with Hangman’s deception last week, but before Joe could lay a hand, Hangman, HOOK, and Eddie Kingston made the save. It was announced that the main event would be The Opps defending the AEW Trios Championships.
Renne Paquette was backstage with Mark Briscoe and Kyle Fletcher. Mark asked Kyle directly for a match and pointed out how he cheated at WrestleDream to win the TNT Championship. He challenged Fletcher to a No Disqualification match at Full Gear for the title. Don Callis said if Mark Briscoe loses, he must join the Don Callis Family. Briscoe agreed to the stipulation.
A match was announced for Full Gear. Kenny Omega and Jurassic Express will take on the Young Bucks and Josh Alexander in a Million Dollar Match. Backstage, Renee stood by with Don Callis, Josh Alexander, and the Young Bucks. Callis vows to make sure the Young Bucks get treated better in the company. The entirety of the Don Callis Family cheered on the Bucks.
AEW announced a Casino Gauntlet match was announced for Full Gear. The winner will be the new AEW National Champion. Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin were announced as the first two participants in the match. The Demand came out to talk down on The Hurt Syndicate. Ricochet talked down on the crowd before MVP said the only thing Ricochet’s ever done well is get beaten up.
FTR also had a segment. They talked about their win last week and have a bone to pick with Brodido. They called them out, so they can talk face-to-face. However, they verbally attacked Bandido’s family instead. In poor Spanish, they introduced themselves to Bandido’s grandmother. They talked down to Bandido to his grandmother, before asking her for a kiss on the cheek. Gravity then defended his grandmother by starting a beatdown on FTR. Brody then punched through the locked door to attack Stokley and came out to attack FTR.
Commentary then promoted the new All Elite book, and a video package for Blood & Guts played. It takes place next week on AEW Dynamite.
In the main event, The Opps defended the Trios Championships. Hangman started against Shibata and gained an early advantage for his team. HOOK continued to lay in on Shibata. Hobbs came in and hit HOOK with a few devastating moves that injured his back. However, HOOK was able to reverse and gain a slight breather right before the ad break.
Coming back, Eddie Kingston was being dominated by Samoa Joe. Joe tagged Hobbs, as Eddie tagged Hangman. They all ended up on the outside, where Hangman slammed Hobbs. Then, he hit a Moonsault, but he only gained a near-fall. Eddie then came back into the Frey but was quickly taken out by Joe. HOOK was then taken out by Shibata, and Hangman and Eddie attempted a double Buckshot Lariat on Shibata.
However, it did not go their way as The Opps took advantage once again. On the stage, Hangman and Hobbs battled. Hobbs slammed Hangman into a table. Joe and Shibata double-teamed Eddie in the ring, but he was able to hold his own until Hobbs came in. However, Hobbs got HOOK in a Torture Rack and HOOK tapped out.
The second match of the night was another round in the AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championship Tournament. Harley Cameron and Willow Nightengale have a new tag team name, ‘The Babes of Wrath.’ Athena and Mone got cheap shots on both of their opponents before the match started. Mone and Athena had an early advantage, keeping Harley away from Willow on the other corner of the ring. A cheap shot towards Willow cost Mone to lose her advantage on Cameron, and she was able to tag in Willow. On the top rope, Willow hit a double drop kick, hitting both women.
Mone and Athena were incredibly dominant throughout the match, but the other team still showed strength. Cameron hit a double crucifix bomb, allowing Willow to cannonball Athena and score a near-fall. Willow’s strength stopped multiple attempts of offense by Mone and Athena. She pushed Athena into Mone to stop her submission attempt on Cameron. Athena hit a double bodyslam on Cameron and Willow, but it wasn’t enough. Billie Starkz tried to get involved, but Kris Statlander stopped her. The distraction allowed Harley and Willow to take advantage and score the pin on Athena.
This hugely unexpected win allows them to move into the semi-finals, against the Sisters of Sin. The tournament will continue next week, on AEW Dynamite.
The first match of the night saw Orange Cassidy taking on Claudio Castagnoli. Cassidy pressed his advantage quickly, bringing Castagnoli to the outside and laying in punches. Then, Castagnoli used his power to pick him up and bring him back into the ring. When both men were finally in the ring, the match officially started.
Claudio brought it back out to the outside and slammed Orange on the barricade. When back in the ring, both men put on a good show against one another. They both laid in offense, and reversed each other’s moves. After attacking his fingers, Castagnoli used them to his advantage and swung Cassidy until he was out of the ring.
Claudio Castagnoli dictated the pace for most of the match before Cassidy was able to gain the upper hand. After a missed baseball slide, Cassidy reversed it into a DDT on Claudio outside the ring. Cassidy scored another near-fall afterwards, before Claudio scored his own with a Liger Bomb. He slid into a submission, which Cassidy broke free from.
Claudio pinned Cassidy to the outside and laid in punches, but Cassidy reversed it into a stunner in the corner. Then, Cassidy hit an Orange Punch before attempting another one. However, Claudio was able to use his strength to upper-cut Cassidy mid-air, giving him the win. Claudio scored the early advantage for the Death Riders at Blood & Guts.
This match started with both men trading holds and locks. Garcia got Darby in the corner and used the turnbuckle to choke him out. Darby hit a senton through the ropes, allowing him to get the upper hand briefly. Allin continued to attack Garcia on the outside. Garcia trapped Allin in the ring apron and used it to regain his advantage. Garcia and Allin traded submissions following the ad break. Allin slid into a pin, earning his first near-fall. However, Garcia pulled Allin into the corner and choked him out.
Then, Allin reversed Garcia’s top-rope move into a Scorpion Death Drop. Following, Garcia blocked Allin’s Coffin Drop attempt. Allin then found his head stuck between the stairs and the ring, and Garcia kicked the stairs into his head. PAC then showed up and knocked Allin down while Garcia distracted the ref. Shockingly, Allin made it into the ring at the 9-count. Garcia then trapped Darby in a Scorpion Death Lock, but Darby reversed into one of his own!
Garcia tapped, and PAC beat down Allin following the match. Orange Cassidy came out to defend Darby. The rest of the Death Riders and The Conglomeration came out to even the odds. Darby stood tall as the Death Riders ran away. Jon Moxley will now take on Roderick Strong at Collision in a tie-breaker match.
Toni Storm accompanied the commentary for this match. Penelope Ford also accompanied Megan Bayne to the ring. Bayne dominated for most of the match, her strength proving vital. However, it did not stop Shirakawa from getting some offense in. Bayne was particularly impressive; many of her moves were hard-hitting. Shirakawa looked strong in her own right.
On the ring apron, she was able to gain a brief advantage, but Bayne proved too great an obstacle. Marina Shafir choked out Toni Storm on commentary, which distracted Mina, and allowed Megan to get the win.
Chaos erupted after the match, as the Triangle of Madness, The Babes of Wrath, Jamie Hayter, Mercedes Mone, and Kris Statlander all came out to beat each other up. Kris, Toni, Mina, Jamie, and the Babes stood tall.
This week’s AEW Dynamite was good, for the most part. It ran long, but proved to be a strong episode ahead of Blood & Guts. Both women’s matches were incredible, per usual. Harley and Willow gaining an unexpected win adds more intrigue to the Tag Team Tournament. However, almost every match ended with a segment or angle. This was particularly annoying, and in some places, unneeded. The main event was also incredibly anti-climactic.
With such a hot feud, one would expect it to be more. Furthermore, HOOK tapping out is a bad finish. HOOK is known for being a brawler, and tapping does not fit his character. Additionally, in an attempt to build HOOK and further his feud with The Opps, he should’ve played a bigger part in the match. If the Opps had to win, HOOK should not have been the one to tap.
Overall, I’ll give this week’s AEW Dynamite a 7/10.
