In the new issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer provided some more details on the injury AJ Styles suffered last week.
Styles was legitimately injured while facing Carmelo Hayes on last Friday’s SmackDown episode. The match ended in a referee stoppage when Styles got hurt while performing an ushigoroshi. Meltzer reports that the injury he suffered was a mid-foot ligament sprain:
Styles suffered a mid-foot ligament sprain in his singles match with Hayes. While he started selling when landing on his feet after a quebrada, and was selling an injury, the leg went out when he was doing an ushigoroshi and the referee stopped the match. He was pretty mad about the whole thing. Styles was to start a storyline where this would be his farewell tour or doing a retirement tease and that’s still the idea pending MRI results showing the severity of the injury.
This was Styles’ first match on WWE television in four months. He had been away since losing to Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes in an “I Quit” match at June’s Clash at the Castle PLE.
Following his victory over Styles, Hayes will challenge LA Knight for the United States title on SmackDown tonight (October 11).
