On Friday, WWE made a fresh round of cuts to its roster. Multiple talents across all brands were released and will now become free agents. According to Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select, Braun Strowman is among those to be released.
Strowman's reported departure is somewhat of a surprise. He has played a key role in WWE getting some of its strong men over with the fanbase. His feud with "Big Bronson Reed" was solid and catapulted Reed to a new level of stardom within the company.
Reed's backstage ambush of Strowman, which led to a tsunami onto a car, was a highlight of their feud in 2024. There was also the spot where the ring collapsed. Both captured fan attention. Both went viral. And both were moments a veteran was helping elevate a younger member of the roster.
Strowman also helped put Jacob Fatu over with the crowd. Fatu ended Strowman's undefeated Last Man Standing streak. That win instantly legitimized Fatu as a force of nature and one of WWE's top strong men. Fatu quickly went on to win the United States Championship.
WWE had no problem leaning on Strowman when it was increasing Fatu's standing within the company. The same can be said about Reed. Both of those feuds are less than a year old. The Last Man Standing match was just weeks ago. So to cut Strowman now is a head-scratcher.
Yes, Strowman is on the decline. His knees are clearly shot, and he isn't going to give you any major matches. But he's proven his value as a powerhouse who is willing to take bumps to put younger talent over. That is valuable, especially for WWE, which likes to have multiple powerhouse wrestlers on the roster.
After continually putting his body on the line for others to advance, Strowman deserved better than being unceremoniously cast aside. He's a veteran within the company, having been with it on two occasions. WWE must now figure out what to do if it signs another powerhouse and looks to give them a boost with the fanbase.
Strowman is unlikely to land in AEW, as he doesn't have the athleticism to match its style. As such, he could be looking at a spell with TNA or GCW. Otherwise, his career has likely come to an end, and he deserves far better than that.
