You'd probably assume that wrestling moves that stand the test of time are thought about meticulously for weeks, if not months, before being wheeled out in front of thousands of people for the first time, but no. D'Lo Brown has revealed how he helped The Rock invent The People's Elbow, a finisher he would quickly become synonymous with, and it was basically an accident.

D'Lo Brown Details The Origins Of The People's Elbow

Speaking on Rewind Recap Relive, Brown revealed that the only reason Rock performed The People's Elbow for the first time was because he ran to the wrong side of the ring one time. "He hit the ropes to his left, which makes you come off with a left-handed elbow. Rocky can't drop an elbow to his left, so when he came off, he looked, kept running, and that's when he dropped the right elbow," Brown explained.

The move was so new that Rock didn't even have a name for it yet. However, Brown revealed that they referred to it as the "hitch" due to the leg kick Rock did before dropping the elbow. Agreeing that the move should become a part of Rock's arsenal, the two of them proceeded to brainstorm ideas for a name, and once they did, Brown became the first to say it on WWE television.

Getting The Name Of The People's Elbow Out There

"It was on Raw one night when I was doing colour commentary with Jim Ross and The King, when I interrupted JR, and go 'Rock's got a present for the people, something he wants to give back to the people', and I named the People's Elbow live on Raw," Brown revealed. He did note that Rock was the one who landed on the name, but since he was in the ring doing the move, it was Brown on commentary who had the honor of revealing the new move's name to the world.

There is another famous story tied to The People's Elbow that I'm assuming came before it was ever given a name. Triple H once noted that he was the first ever recipient of a People's Elbow, and that he and The Rock did it for no other reason than to try and get The Undertaker to break character and laugh. The Rock has also previously said that the move was an homage to Dusty Rhodes, making the reveal as part of a tribute to The American Dream and claiming it was inspired by Rhodes' finisher, The Bionic Elbow.
