On the September 30, 2025 episode of NXT, Mustafa Ali returned after two years away. He confronted a certain wrestler, the NXT North American Champion Ethan Page. To him, he deserved a title shot. Usually, a challenger says that without much to back them up. But he had a legitimate claim to the title.

He was going to face then North American Champion Dominik Mysterio two years ago to that day. But nine days before, he got a call from WWE. He was released without getting that title opportunity. Page, luckily, understood what he was saying, and the title match was made official for NXT Showdown. Would Ali win the title, or would Page snatch the victory away from him?

Page Retains in Controversial Fashion

Going into the match, both men had made up their mind that they were going to win. For Page, a win meant not only staying champion, but he’d get a victory for NXT. But for Ali, he was righting a wrong that was definitely in his head for the past two years. He never got that title opportunity two years ago, but he had one now. Not only that, it would be important for TNA to get a victory and a title from NXT.

Both men fought real hard during the match. They traded pinfalls, but were unable to keep each other down for three seconds. Desperate to win, Page turned to his bag of tricks. Usually, he does something to get the advantage and the pinfall in a sneaky way. Unfortunately for Ali, this match was no different.

He got Page outside and dove through the ropes onto him. Both men collided onto the announcer’s table, prompting Booker T and Vic Joseph to abandon their seats. Page got Ali up, but kicked Booker T’s headset away from him as they were walking away. The cord wrapped itself around Ali’s leg without him realizing. He noticed it while he was on the top turnbuckle, allowing Page to shove him onto the ground.

Page grabbed him and pushed him back into the ring. Then he used his signature move, the Twisted Grin to get the pinfall. The three-count was spoken, and Page retained his championship. This is now twice that Ali has had the championship taken away from him under dubious circumstances. First, his release took away his title opportunity. Now, blatant interference cost him the title. It would make sense that he’ll be back in the NXT North American title picture soon enough. But for now, Ethan Page is still the NXT North American Champion.
