Former AEW champion hints at retirement

AEW held its largest show in North America on Saturday, July 12. All-In Texas took place at Globe Life Field and had more than 25,000 fans in attendance.

With a stacked card, fans saw the company continue its tradition of putting on exceptionally good pay-per-view events. However, Khan was forced to make a change to the card at short notice.

Adam Cole had been ruled out of his TNT title defense due to not being medically cleared. Cole vacated the title after holding it for a total of 97 days. He won the title in a match against Daniel Garcia at AEW Dynasty on April 6.

As a result, Khan has pieced together a 4-way bout for the championship. Dustin Rhodes, Sammy Guevara, Kyle Fletcher and Garcia all duked it out for the right to become the next champion.

Before the match took place, a tearful Cole entered the ring to address the crowd and the fans watching at home around the world. He explained that injuries are going to keep him out of the ring for the foreseeable future, even hinting at the potential need for retirement. Cole has been a fan favorite during his time in AEW.

Despite Cole's somber announcement, the replacement match went off without a hitch. From the high-flying Guevara to the hard-hitting Fletcher, everyone in the ring left a strong impression. However, it was "The Natural" Dustin Rhodes who took home the championship. The victory itself was a memorable moment, as it was Rhodes' first title within AEW, despite multiple close calls.

Losing Cole from the card can't have been easy. However, the speed at which Khan and the creative team pivoted is impressive. And now, there's scope for multiple storylines to stem from this match. Most logically, though, it will be how Fletcher tries to inject himself back into the TNT title picture, and whether he can overcome the vast experience that Rhodes will bring to the table.
