Gunther appears to have another WWE legend in his sights after defeating Bill Goldberg and sending him into retirement at Saturday Night's Main Event earlier this month.
The World Heavyweight Champion beat Goldberg in the former WCW megastar's final pro wrestling match as he called time on his career. The Austrian heavyweight is set to collide with CM Punk at SummerSlam, but he is targeting a match against another blockbuster name sooner rather than later.
Gunther has yet to face Cena during his career, having arrived on the main roster when the 17-time world champion transitioned to Hollywood and adopted a part-time schedule. Many expect the pair to battle it out before the 48-year-old retires at the end of the year after concluding his farewell tour.
The 37-year-old spoke about Cena's retirement tour and the prospect of facing him at some stage. He told Radio Times:
"It’s great for him that he’s able to do that and say, 'This is the way I want to finish it and the way I want to go out.' It’s a great way to do it. "If somebody deserves it, then it’s him. It’s good to have him back around."
Gunther added:
"Obviously, I have not interacted with him or seen him much because he’s on SmackDown mostly, but who knows, there’s still a long time left, so maybe there’s a chance to get in there with him before he hangs it up."
Cena, like Gunther, will also be in action this Sunday (August 3) when he defends his Undisputed WWE Championship against Cody Rhodes on night two of SummerSlam. Both world champions have yet to cross paths but there is still plenty of time for them to lock horns.
The WrestleMania 41 night two main event was met with massive backlash due to Travis Scott's appearance, which cost Rhodes the match against Cena. There was some surprise over WWE's decision to go with Royal Rumble winner Jey Uso as Gunther's challenger at the Show of Shows.
John Cena Sr. had spoken of his desire to see his son face Gunther prior to the heel turn that took place at Elimination Chamber. He said (via Fightful) in January:
“Gunther. Nothing against Cody Rhodes, I have nothing but good words for Cody, if you remember when Randy Orton was kicking the stuffing out of me, it was Cody Rhodes that came down and tried to make the save. So I have nothing but good words for Cody Rhodes, I just think Gunther right now is at the peak of his career. He’s the best of the best."
Gunther's stock has risen tenfold since arriving on the main roster in April 2022, becoming the longest reigning Intercontinental Champion in history. He then beat Damian Priest at SummerSlam last year to become World Heavyweight Champion and he's now in his second reign with the title.
