Reports are surfacing this week that, before R-Truth was told his contract wouldn't be renewed, John Cena made a pitch to work with his friend and the veteran Superstar in the hopes it would save Truth's job in WWE.

According to a recent report by Chris The Wrestling Informer, R-Truth's WWE exit had been planned for a while, with the company's president, Nick Khan, reportedly including the 52-year-old talent in an early cost-benefit analysis this year. Rather than being outright released, the call was made to allow R-Truth's contract to expire in silence simply. The report hints that Cena caught wind of this and took action.
Aware of the situation, John Cena requested that Truth be included in his current farewell tour. Cena wanted to work a program with R-Truth, looking to demonstrate that the well-liked comedy wrestler and former 24/7 and U.S. Champion still had value as an on-screen performer. The thinking was, if Truth and Cena could draw a big house and strong revenue, it might go a long ways to WWE changing its mind.
Other reports are surfacing that Truth was offered a significantly lower contract extension, which he ultimately declined.
The accuracy of either of these reports is not known.
Cena and R-Truth have shared the ring and the screen many times, building a rapport based on mutual respect and genuine friendship. Cena likely understood how important Truth was to the overall presentation in WWE. That said, Cena has gone on record before saying he just comes in and does what WWE asks of him. It is more than likely that even if he requested the match, he knew it wasn't likely to sway WWE's opinion on the decision.
While the attempt to save his job didn’t pan out, R-Truth’s legacy as one of WWE’s most beloved and consistent entertainers is secure. If he wants to, it's likely he'll find work with another promotion, as TNA is already rumored to be interested.
