2024 was a remarkable year for Liv Morgan. A second world title, the inaugural Crown Jewel championship, and a memorable revenge tour massively elevated the stock of the female superstar last year. The advent of the Netflix era has provided the perfect platform for a star that continues to be on the rise, and Hollywood has taken notice.
On this week’s edition of WWE Raw, Morgan had a request for time off granted by stand-in GM Nick Aldis. It was revealed during the week that Morgan had landed a significant role in a “big Hollywood movie”.
Previously, Liv Morgan starred alongside Samuel L. Jackson and Uma Thurman in 2023’s “The Kill Room”. She also guest-starred in the “Chucky” series in 2022. Significantly, this marks the first time that Morgan will be playing someone other than her WWE persona on screen.
After days of speculation, it was finally revealed that Morgan will be starring in “Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo”. The film co-stars popular Japanese actor Shun Oguri, best known to Western audiences for 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong”.
Also starring in the film is Lily James, the Golden Globe and Emmy-nominated actress best known for her starring roles in “Mamma Mia!” “Here We Go Again”, “Baby Driver”, and “Pam & Tommy”. And of course, wrestling fans will recognize her from 2023’s “The Iron Claw”, the Von Erich family biopic. James portrayed Pam Adkisson, wife of Kevin Von Erich.
The film will be helmed by the controversial but celebrated Japanese director Takashi Miike. Miike’s best-known works are cult horror films “Audition” and “Ichi the Killer”, as well as his 2010 remake of “13 Assassins”. “Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo” will be the third in the Bad Lieutenant sequence of films, following 1992’s “Bad Lieutenant” and 2009’s “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans”.
Morgan will be unable to wrestle for up to a month, with production beginning in May. At this moment in time, she and Raquel Rodriguez are not expecting to vacate the women’s tag titles.
Oguri will play the lieutenant in question, working with James’ FBI agent to discover the whereabouts of a politician’s kidnapped daughter, played by Morgan. Similarly to the 1992 film, starring Harvey Keitel, Oguri’s lieutenant will be battling a gambling addiction. The plot will also focus on a Yakuza killer.
Another marker of the film’s prestige is its North American distribution by NEON. The American company notably distributed “Parasite” and “Anora”, the winners of the Best Picture Oscar in 2019 and 2025, respectively.
