'People were pretty shocked,' Former WWE champion reveals how the locker room reacted to the infamous bout between The Undertaker and Goldberg in Saudi Arabia

The main event of Super ShowDown 2019 was billed as a ‘dream’ match between The Undertaker and Goldberg. Despite being two of the biggest legends in the industry, fans didn’t have too many expectations for this. And rightfully so, as the bout ended up being a botchfest. Recently, Matt Hardy opened up about how the locker room felt about the underwhelming clash.

Speaking on his ‘The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy’ podcast, the veteran claimed that there were mixed expectations of the match. Hardy recalled watching it backstage along with Randy Orton and several other stars. Further, he revealed that talent expressed concern when Undertaker landed on his neck. This occurred when Goldberg attempted a Jackhammer on the Phenom but failed to lift him up.

This resulted in a scary landing, which had fans worried about the legends. According to Matt Hardy, a lot of stars felt that the match would end in this direction. Meanwhile, others believed that the duo would put on a five-minute, fast-paced match. In fact, Hardy claimed that it was a major reason why everyone backstage watched it.

Aside from the botched Jackhammer, there were other moves that raised eyebrows as to why WWE booked the bout. At the end, Undertaker defeated Goldberg with a weak chokeslam, which summed up the main event of the night

How did The Undertaker and Goldberg recovered from their atrocious match?

Before his ‘Last Ride’ at WrestleMania 36, The Undertaker yearned for a perfect sendoff for years. Therefore, he competed in a string of underwhelming and poor matches, including the one at Super ShowDown 2019. As such, to repair the damage caused by it, the Deadman returned a month later at Extreme Rules.

Taker teamed up with Roman Reigns to take on Shane McMahon and Drew McIntyre in a match that garnered praise from fans. Meanwhile, Goldberg would similarly return prior to SummerSlam. The Myth would go on to defeat Dolph Ziggler in a glorified squash at the Biggest Party of the Summer.

The WCW legend even went on to win the Universal Championship six months later by squashing The Fiend. In his last match for the promotion, he lost against Reigns at Elimination Chamber 2022, with WWE choosing not to extend his contract following the event.
