According to Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select, Hobbs’ AEW contract officially expired, making him contractually eligible to sign with any company, including WWE. Speculation is that he could be inked to a deal as early as this week. The most logical debut timing would be the Royal Rumble.
WWE sources told Fightful that they believe Hobbs is headed to the company, “barring some huge unforeseen change.” Whether that change be another offer from a different company or a new deal from AEW, Hobbs reportedly finished up his AEW run quietly at Wednesday night’s AEW Collision tapings following Dynamite. It is more than possible that was his final appearance for the promotion he joined in 2020.
Hobbs built a strong résumé in AEW after breaking out with Team Taz alongside Ricky Starks, Brian Cage, and Hook. He later emerged as a singles force, highlighted by winning the AEW TNT Championship from Wardlow in March 2023. Hobbs also aligned with the Don Callis Family and captured the AEW World Trios Championship.
AEW and Hobbs had been in negotiations for several months in an effort to keep the powerhouse talent. Sources indicated the company made a “huge” and “substantial” offer to retain him. Despite that, Hobbs ultimately chose to test free agency. The report notes that he is leaving AEW on good terms, with no lingering issues between the two sides.
WWE’s interest in Hobbs is not new. Fightful reports that the company has had its eye on him for years, dating back to Dan Ventrelle’s time overseeing talent relations. While rumors of a potential WWE move surfaced months ago, there was reportedly no direct contact until recently. Once Hobbs’ contract neared expiration, however, discussions accelerated quickly.
If he signs with WWE, he would follow several former AEW stars in making the jump, with his next move expected soon.
