It has now been roughly three months since Santos Escobar quietly re-signed with WWE, and his continued absence from television is raising more questions than answers. There is good news and bad news about the Lucha Libre star.

Escobar Fell Through The Cracks In WWE

Escobar’s situation first became confusing last fall when his WWE contract expired in October. Shortly after, his profile was moved to the WWE Alumni section of the company’s official website—typically a clear sign that a talent has parted ways. Escobar also posted a social media message at the time that strongly suggested he was moving on, adding to the belief that his run with WWE had come to an end.

Seemingly, out of nowhere, reports surfaced that Escobar had signed a new deal with WWE.

Despite that, he has yet to return to television, live events, PLE's, or any storyline programming on any brand, including AAA. This has left fans wondering what exactly is going on behind the scenes.

According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Escobar’s absence has been described internally as something that “fell through the cracks.”

WWE Is Trying To Come Up With A Creative Plan For Escobar

Meltzer noted that while the situation stalled, there have been discussions within WWE about getting things “back on track,” suggesting the company hasn’t simply moved on from the idea of using him. It's unclear if he would return and once again be the leader of Legado del Fantasma or if WWE may move in a completely different direction. They may not yet know.

All that said, it would be helpful for the company to develop a plan. Escobar was last seen in action on July 27 at WWE SuperShow Mexico, where he teamed with Angel and Berto in a loss to Mr. Iguana, Pagano, and Psycho Clown. Since then, he has been completely absent from WWE programming. Angel and Berto have remained active, continuing to compete as Los Garza.

This is not the first time WWE has had a talent under contract and not used them. However, Escobar’s status is somewhat unusual given the speed in which his last-minute extension came together. WWE has not publicly addressed the situation, and there’s been no indication of an injury or disciplinary issue that would explain the delay.
