Roman Reigns is reportedly set to challenge for a world title at WrestleMania 42 but which one that is has yet to be determined ahead of WWE Survivor Series: WarGames tonight (November 29). The OTC teams up with Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes and World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk in San Diego, California.
Reigns is set to main event WrestleMania yet again, having done so on 10 occasions, including on night one last year. He was pinned by Seth Rollins in a triple threat match also featuring Punk.
Both Punk and Rhodes, who have faced Reigns in two Mania main events, were put on notice by the Head of the Table on WWE RAW this past Monday. He told the pair, "That title would look much better on my shoulder."
This left fans second-guessing which of the pair he is targeting ahead of the Road to WrestleMania 42. Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that the original plan was for Reigns to face Rollins for the World Heavyweight Championship until he was forced to vacate it due to a shoulder injury.
It's now claimed that the current direction is for Reigns to challenge either Rhodes or Punk or whoever is one of the world champions heading into the Show of Shows. He was expected to battle Rollins on night two's main event, and that remains his spot against whomever.
While Punk is the fresher option from a booking standpoint, as Reigns has never faced the Best in the World one-on-one on a PLE. But another match with Rhodes allows the pair to continue their iconic feud and could be a clever way to take their lengthy rivalry to the next level, with both acting as babyfaces and leaving fans divided.
Rhodes is in his second reign as Undisputed WWE Champion after defeating John Cena at SummerSlam. He won his first world title by "finishing his story" and beating Reigns in the WrestleMania 40 main event.
There will be pressure on WWE's creative team to deliver a compelling story that follows the drama that ensued between Reigns and Rhodes during their past Road to WrestleMania feuds. They spent the entire year building Rhodes' revenge mission when he suffered a shock loss at WrestleMania 39, which made the payoff that much sweeter.
But the magnitude of that victory wouldn't have been as celebrated if not for the involvement of The Rock for both kayfabe and legitimate reasons. He was WWE's choice to face Reigns that year, but fans ensured Rhodes claimed his world title match after winning a second Royal Rumble.
That's why if WWE do go down the route of booking a third match between the pair, they need to spice things up by planting the seeds for a potential WrestleMania 43 story. That's if reports suggesting The Rock will participate in Saudi Arabia are true.
They could either build towards the Final Boss coming back to claim Rhodes' soul and the Undisputed WWE Championship or revive the Bloodline war many had been anticipating with Reigns. But with or without Rock, there are many other directions to take one of the greatest rivalries in the promotion's history.
