Sheamus has been on a quest to become Intercontinental Champion for the first time in his career since Clash at the Castle 2022. The Celtic Warrior has had 13 shots at becoming IC Champion since then, falling short every single time. The multiple-time WWE Champion reiterated his desire to win that belt and become the "first-ever Ultimate Grand Slam Champion" in WWE. The thing is, there's already been one.
Speaking with the Daily Mail, Sheamus spoke about how much it hurt to miss WrestleMania this year, but also noted that he has continued to bug those in charge at WWE for shots at the Intercontinental Title.
I had pitched to hopefully get in the Intercontinental title stuff again. They’re probably tired about me talking about it, but that’s the one title that I have left to become the first ever Ultimate Grand Slam Champion in WWE. That’s the Holy Grail, that’s it.
As titles have changed names and even been retired in WWE, the definition of what makes someone a Grand Slam Champion has changed. Right now, you need to have won a World Title, a Tag Title, the IC Title, and the US Title. That means, if and when Sheamus wins the Intercontinental Title, he will become WWE's 25th Grand Slam Champion.
Becoming an Ultimate Grand Slam Champion is an even rarer accomplishment. On top of the titles listed above, you also need to have won a Royal Rumble, Money in the Bank, and King of the Ring. Sheamus has done all of those things, hence his claiming he will be the first Ultimate Grand Slam Champion should he eventually shake the monkey on his back and win the Intercontinental Title.
The trouble is, someone has already beaten him to it, and that some is Edge. The Rated R Superstar has checked off everything Sheamus has on the Ultimate Grand Slam list, but he has also been Intercontinental Champion. Edge has won it five times. Sheamus has already tried to argue his buddy's claim to be the first-ever Ultimate Grand Slam Champion as unfounded, though.
Earlier this year, Sheamus told USA Today that Edge's Ultimate Grand Slam crown doesn't count as he won the US Title when it was still a championship affiliated with WCW. Edge won the US Title in 2001, and shortly after that, it and the Intercontinental Title were unified, resulting in the US Title being retired for a couple of years. Sheamus's claim that Edge's Ultimate Grand Slam crown doesn't count might be a fair one. That said, there might be a time when Edge returns to WWE and wins the US Title for real, just to mess with Sheamus.
