The Hardys, consisting of Matt and Jeff Hardy, are continuing to add to their achievements as they look to become the greatest tag-team that has ever stepped foot in a wrestling ring.
It’s a bold statement, but on Tuesday night, the TNA tag-team champions The Hardys faced the NXT champions Dark State (Osiris Griffin, Dio Lennox) in what was booked as a “champions vs champions” match. It kicked off the massive show, which pitted TNA Wrestling’s biggest names against those from NXT. The match had its moments, but none bigger than Matt Hardy executing a twist of fate followed by a Jeff Hardy swanton bomb to secure the 1-2-3 pin and victory.
The win makes The Hardys the only tag team to win gold in WWE, WCW, TNA, ROH, SmackDown, RAW, and now NXT. Aside from their accomplishments as a tag team, individually, they have earned a combined nine world titles from WWE, TNA, and ECW. That is quite the accomplishment for 51-year-old Matt and 48-year-old Jeff, who haven’t shown any signs of slowing down any time soon. Their recent victory makes them dual tag team champions as they head into TNA’s “Bound For Glory” PPV on Sunday night against The Dudley Boyz. Regardless of what happens on Sunday night, The Hardys’ victory on Tuesday put them in uncharted territory.
When discussing all-time greats in wrestling, it’s essential to categorize them by era. It’s an unfair comparison, especially with the accessibility of wrestling content through paywall subscription-based streaming platforms, YouTube, social media, and more. So when you are talking about The Hardys surpassing teams like the Road Warriors, The Hart Foundation, The Rock’n Roll Express, The Midnight Express, and The Fabulous Freebirds, to name a few, it can be a hard conversation to have.
Those legendary teams mentioned did not have social media, and the wrestling promotions not named WWE didn’t have the opportunities that those independent companies have in today’s digital world. With all of that said, The Hardys could still be considered the greatest simply because they have achieved this through so many different eras, spanning from 1992 to the present day, which is nearly impossible to do. They were also able to do this by overcoming a ton of personal issues throughout the years, but the one thing that kept them together through it all was that they never gave up on each other.
The Hardys, being relevant today through a career spanning over 33 years, is nothing short of amazing. With all the accomplishments they have earned, there will likely be no debate when they decide to retire that they are the greatest wrestling tag team of all time.
