The John Cena retirement tour was pretty much the talk of the town in wrestling circles even before it began in January. Now that it’s reeling at the tail end, one could subjectively rate how they feel about the run, which, to many, has been all over the place. Amid that chaos, former WWE lead writer Vince Russo has come up with a staggering claim.
Speaking on Sportskeeda WrestleBinge, the ex-WWE writer stated that he’s heard rumors about Cena being unhappy and dissatisfied with how things have panned out in his WWE farewell tour. While that was still a believable sentiment that Cena might harbor, what Russo said after it seems implausible. The latter affirmed that there has apparently been contact between Cena’s camp and AEW. Let that sink in.

It is something that the fans have already dismissed on social media, as evident by the comments underneath the aforementioned post. ‘The Cenation Leader’ has stressed it enough that he will be done wrestling this December. He recently quoted a reply to WWE putting tickets up for sale for Cena’s last match at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
Despite any speculation or rumors, on July 6, 2024 I announced I would retire from WWE in ring participation. I am far from perfect but strive to be a person whose word has value. 12/13/25 will be my final match. I am beyond grateful for every moment WWE has given me. I am… https://t.co/TnUPfuEfzx

Cena wrote in it that he strives to be someone whose word has value. And he gave his word to the WWE Universe in July 2024 that 2025 will be his last year as an active wrestler. ‘The Prototype’ affirmed the date of his swansong and said he’s beyond grateful for everything WWE has given him.
With John Cena scheduled for his next WWE appearance in November, he’s left with only four of them. A report from WON revealed that ‘The Franchise Player’ is scheduled to take on Dominik Mysterio for the Intercontinental Championship at Survivor Series. Not only that, but the possibility of Cena ousting ‘Dom’ to win the IC title has also been discussed within WWE.
If the 48-year-old does humble the Judgment Day member in San Diego, it will make Cena a WWE Grand Slam Champion. Amid ongoing rumors of this clash likely happening, Mysterio recently issued a warning to the 17-time world champion. ‘The King of the Luchadores’ mocked the WWE legend with the ‘old geezer’ dig and quipped that he is all in for putting the final nail in his coffin.
The idea of John Cena winning the IC title from Dominik Mysterio (currently set for Survivor Series) and it being in play for the final match with Gunther has been discussed.

After the rumored Mysterio clash at Survivor Series on November 29, ‘Mr. Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect’ will be a couple of weeks away from his last-ever WWE match on December 13. As soon as the presale tickets were made available last week, almost 60,000 fans flocked over to Ticketmaster in a virtual queue to secure their seats.
The big deal, however, is still undecided. And that’s regarding who would get the honor to oppose the Peacemaker actor in Washington, D.C., when the time comes. If some media reports are to be believed, it’s going to be Gunther. WWE had this match in its pipeline even before Cena kick-started his retirement tour.
A tournament is reportedly in the cards to determine the rightful last match opponent for ‘The Prototype’. If one wants to throw in some fantasy booking, then look no further than WWE’s very own Peter Rosenberg. He pitched Dave Bautista as John Cena’s final rival while appearing on Chris Van Vliet‘s Insight podcast.
Rosenberg concurred with the host’s assessment of Bautista never coming out of retirement but noted that the fan inside him wants to see it. ‘The Animal’ has already given his thoughts on Cena’s last year in WWE. The Killer’s Game actor told Van Vliet last year that he would’ve never done a retirement tour, as it would feel disingenuous to him.
