After winning gold four times in NXT, things have not been so easy for Carmelo Hayes on WWE’s main roster. Currently assigned to SmackDown, Hayes has struggled to gain any traction backstage or in the ring. He has been mired in mid-card feuds that were going nowhere or getting squashed for most of the time since his call-up. So, what will it take for the former NXT star to finally break through and win gold on the main roster?
In NXT, Hayes was a two-time North American Champion, a one-time Cruiserweight Champion, and a one-time NXT Champion. Since his call-up, though, the closest he has gotten to gold has been winning the Andre the Giant Battle Royal. He has failed to capture mid-card and tag team gold several times and failed in his two attempts to take the WWE Championship from Cody Rhodes. Hayes has a dynamic and athletic move set in the ring, and he is more than capable on the mic.
There is one major difference for Hayes between his time in NXT and his time on SmackDown. He doesn’t have Trick Williams to play off of. Hayes found his greatest success with Williams by his side or across the ring. The Trick-Melo Gang ran roughshod over NXT for much of Hayes’ time there. The two worked well on the mic together, and they worked well in the ring both together and against each other. Could a reunion with Williams be what Hayes needs to finally break through? It would make perfect sense.
Williams has been ready for the call-up to the main roster for quite some time. Hayes and Williams recently buried the hatchet after Hayes’ betrayal in NXT caused the breakup of the Trick-Melo Gang. The breakup would be the catalyst for his main roster run. Now it is time to put the band back together. Williams needs a reason to leave NXT, and Hayes needs someone better than the Miz to help him win gold again. The Trick-Melo Gang would be the perfect team to take the tag titles away from the Wyatt Sicks.
Hayes has a world of talent and potential, and it is a shame that Triple-H has not found a way to put gold around his waist on WWE’s main roster. A reunion with Williams needs to happen sooner rather than later. Both wrestlers are in a rut, and this is the perfect way to fix that. The SmackDown tag team division is in a similar rut and needs a big shakeup. Putting the tag belts on a reunited Trick-Melo Gang fixes that situation, as well. The tag division gets a fresh new set of matchups, and TMG finally gets to show off what they can do on the main roster. It is a win-win.
Sure, the two will eventually have to split up and feud again, but at that point, they will both have won gold and established themselves. Honestly, their stint as a duo could last much longer than just while they are holding the tag belts. The two have great chemistry and are not afraid to cheat to win. They could have a great heel run in the mid-card as a faction before one inevitably stabs the other in the back over a mid-card title. When they do break up, the feud will be just as good a story as their ascent together, and hopefully, just as good as it was in NXT.
